 | Rochester, the World's Largest Hick Town | Aug 12, 2004 |
Rochester: it's not big, nor trendy, not cosmo, nor the center of much of anything globally significant. Though many of us believe we can turn our smugtown into a place the whole world knows for something, we know that's been a half-century struggle. Most of us would truly settle for making it a better place to live, and that each of us has a place in that place, somewhere to return when all hell breaks loose or when worldly ambitions seem worlds apart. Rochester: it's not Paris, nor Hong Kong, but it's just big enough, just good enough, and the center of things personally significant, to call home. Technorati Profile

Postponed due to rain on National Trails Day, the Canalway Trails Association New York, Parks & Trails New York, the New York State Canal Corporation, and the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor Commission have rescheduled the third annual Canalway Trail Celebration for August 12, 2006. Volunteers who have adopted sections of the Trail host a trek along the entire 39 miles of the trail within Monroe County. Rain or shine, one relay team of cyclists and runners travels west from Wayne County, while another team travels east from Orleans County, and take turns relaying a celebration flag.
Inline skaters can join this relay on paved segments starting either from Schoen Place to the east or from Long Pond Rd to the west, and converge together onto Genesee Valley Park at 1pm. So long as the weather remains fair and the Trail dry, skaters from the Rochester Inline Skate Club can gather at Genesee Valley Park and skate to each start and reconverge at Genesee Valley Park, while others join at various points.

performed by the Ying Quartet. Now in its second decade, the Ying Quartet has developed an international reputation for its commitment to making artistic and creative expression an essential part of life. Initiatives in this direction include a visiting residency at Symphony Space in New York City linking music with other art forms (including poetry, dance, and film), collaborations with the Turtle Island String Quartet which explore jazz, improvisation, and the classical string quartet tradition, and a project with Hyperscore, a computer program that enables non-musicians to compose music for the Quartet to perform. The Ying’s ongoing commissioning project, LifeMusic, designed to produce a distinctively American string quartet repertoire, thus far includes ten new works, and this season adds quartets by Pierre Jalbert and John Duffy. Current recording projects include LifeMusic on the Quartz Label, Tchaikovsky for Arabesque, and a Telarc recording with the Turtle Island String Quartet. The EMI Classics recording of works by Osvaldo Golijov on which the Ying Quartet appears with the St. Lawrence Quartet was nominated for a 2003 Grammy Award. The Quartet is in residence at the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester, and since 2001 its members have been the Blodgett Artists in Residence at Harvard University.
With “Musical Dim Sum”, the Yings continue to extend their repertoire of innovative programming concepts while celebrating their own cultural heritage. On these programs, the Quartet includes a selection of short works by Chinese American composers in the framework of a traditional concert, giving audiences the treat of a diverse sampling of this music. New York, New York, Rochester is not, but for a brief Thursday eve, hundreds, nay, thousands stroll the walks, ride horse-drawn carriages, nibble fire-roasted chestnuts, and enjoy caroling along Park Avenue. Pedestrians everywhere, so desperately missing here but for only a moment, romantically conjure big city, bright lights. Holiday Open Houses Thursday, December 1, 5–9p Park Avenue, Rochester, New York
Think of a pedestrian bridge running from Village Gate over the railroad tracks to the Hungerford Buildings. Imagine the potential of the underused Armory or Masonic Auditorium on East Main. What if a bike/skate trail ran from Atlantic Ave and the Neighborhood of the Arts to the Public Market? Architects, urban planners, and you too, can address these issues and more during a community design process, a charrette, where you bring your artistic skills and points of view to construct a new vision of how that urban environment, the architecture, traffic, space and people ought work. Help shape your city! The charrette previews Friday 5pm with a behind-the-scenes walking tour of the neighborhood and five landmark buildings, the Armory, the Hungerford, the Wehle, and Dazzle Theatre, and the Masonic Auditorium Center and Theatre. The charrette proper begins Saturday 8:30a and runs through 4pm. Because parking Saturday for the Market overflows onto Laborers' Union Hall, they charge for parking. Instead, shop the Public Market early that morning and then walk two blocks up Railroad Street to the charrette, or try parking at the Hungerford and cross back north over East Main. To participate and to walk the tour, please register and dig into the site. What a day!
Tour five cavernous landmark buildings and the neighborhoods surrounding them and an imposing corner in Rochester, the intersection of not only Goodman and Main, but also for a CSX rail trunk running from Chicago to Boston. There the overpass and 6 lanes of Main fracture the city into distinct sectors, dividing them from each other, the Village Gate from the Public Market, the Neighborhood of the Arts from Beechwood from each Lower and Upper Marketview Heights. Severed, without a walkable intermix of residences, offices, and marketplaces, none of these neighborhoods and buildings thrive. Saturday's all day charrette, a community design process to bridge the neighborhoods, begins with Friday evening's behind-the-scenes walking tour of the neighborhood and five landmark buildings, the Armory, the Hungerford, the Wehle, the Dazzle Theatre, and the Auditorium Center and Theatre. Then at 7pm in the Dryden Theatre, as an informal follow-up see Sketches of Frank Gehry, a selection in the High Falls Film Fest. The charrette proper begins Saturday 8:30a and runs through 4pm. To attend the tour and to participate, both free, please register and then dig into the site.
